    The Good

DownToEarth.com is a beautiful site that was a pleasure to visit.

Registration was quick. I was browsing profiles within *seconds* of visiting the site.

The photo upload page allowed me to dynamically resize and crop photos inside my browser before uploading them. It was a welcome feature. I hope more dating sites adopt it.

The site was visually stunning and well-designed. Big, beautiful photos coupled with a clean (almost Spartan) design made it easy on my eyes (and my fingers). There was very little scrolling involved thanks to the minimalist design ethic and an intelligent use of AJAX.

In line with this minimalism, profiles only contained essential information and search criteria were limited. I believe less is more so I saw these as good things but “advanced search” aficionados will hunger for more options.

Being able to show search results as a gallery of photos was nice, too. It’s becoming a fairly standard feature but it’s always welcome.

As with all free sites, there were banner ads. I saw image banners above the content, text ads below it and, on some pages, text ads on the left side. The ads were not excessive or obtrusive.

Free sites attract scammers. To fight fake profiles, DownToEarth introduced a “Real Rating” system where people can vouch for people they’ve met.

Profile quality was excellent. There were many attractive women (some extremely so) and there seemed to be a good age distribution in my area.

    The Bad

I have nothing bad to say about DownToEarth.com.

Some people have noted that it lacks features (such as advanced search, embedded video, etc.). For me, seeing a dating site stripped down to its most fundamental features was refreshing. Hopefully, the programmers and designers will be able to resist feature creep. ;)

    The Beautiful

The site design and profiles were exactly as advertised: down to earth.

It was devoid of bells and whistles. Nothing distracted me from viewing profiles quickly and efficiently.

The profiles were high quality and they all seemed serious about dating or friendship. None of the profiles seemed vulgar, exhibitionist or “flame bait” (intended to get a rise out of people). Most seemed like attractive, intelligent people who were serious about finding someone special.

DownToEarth was a great name for this site. It fit the design (and the people the design attracted) perfectly. The person who came up with the name is a genius.

    Worth Visiting?

    YES!

It’s a dating site work of art. To the developers, programmers and designers: Bravo! You’ve created a wonderful online experience that raises the bar for all dating sites (not just the 100% free ones).

    Worth Subscribing?

    Oh, YES!

Stunning profiles framed by a clean site. Simple and simply beautiful.
